Starting Roleplay Scenarios
When planning on starting a roleplaying thread the two major questions you need to answer first are "Do I want to receive an award of credits or experience for this thread?" and "Do I want to keep what happens in this thread an in-character secret?"
If you do want to receive a reward for roleplaying in a thread but do not care whether the events of it are a public in-character knowledge, then you should start a roleplaying thread in the Public section. When starting a Public Roleplaying thread please consult the list of Open Roleplay Scenarios in the Earning Credits and Experience Points thread. Your Public Roleplaying thread may contain any number of these scenarios, although the experience points and credits are not rewarded until the thread is concluded. The first post of your thread should either be entirely an OOC preliminary description or at least have an OOC preliminary portion in which you will describe the purpose of your thread as well as include the number of skills checks, and their difficulty, your character will attempt, as well as the number of combat encounters, the number of enemies per encounter, and which character sheets they will utilize. Your opening post may contain an In-Character portion if the thread has been approved ahead of time by a storyteller in the Public Scenario Setup thread in Roleplay Discussion section, otherwise you must wait before a storyteller responds to your preliminary post approving the chosen skill checks and combat encounters.
A Public Roleplaying thread can be started without involving any skill checks or storyteller involvement, when doing so the characters participating will not receive any experience points or credits as a reward but the preliminary description or set up can be skipped, going right into In-Character roleplay instead.
If you do want to receive a reward for roleplaying in a thread but do want to keep the events of the thread an in-character secret, then you should start a roleplaying thread in the Faction Roleplay section. The setup of a Faction Roleplay thread is similar to the Public Roleplaying thread setup in that you can decide whether you want to involve a storyteller and gain a reward of experience and credits, or do a thread without any combat and skill checks. The only difference is that you must specify which Faction this roleplay is for, both in the name by putting the Faction name in brackets, for example [Metal Lords], and by specifying in the OOC preliminary portion of your opening post. The events of these threads are only known to the Faction's members, unless they are willing to share them with others in-character.
If you want to keep the events of your thread secret and do not care whether you will receive a reward of experience points and credits for them then you can start a a roleplaying thread in the Private section. These threads do not require any setup, you can just create one and start roleplaying as soon as you want. Storyteller could get involved if you want to conduct some combat or skill checks, but you will not receive any rewards for these.
Joining Roleplay Scenarios
Unless otherwise specified at the beginning or in the title of the thread, the writer who posts the roleplaying thread decides which characters are allowed to join it. As such, if you have not been invited to join a particular thread but would like to, the best approach is to message the thread's author and ask them for permission first. Only storytellers are allowed to issue exceptions to these rules, for example when a target within a particular thread has a bounty on them and the bounty hunter interested in joining the thread makes successful rolls to track them down in a separate thread, a storyteller may get involved and allow the bounty hunter to join the thread even if the target would try to refuse so that the hunter may make an attempt at collecting the bounty.
